Can I still revive my living rock/stone plant (cactus-type plant)? The poor thing is dying...if not dead :(?

I can't enlarge the picture any, but from what I can make out I would say it is growing. The stone "splits" and then peels away and the new one is underneath. I don't know how else to explain it. Water it with a mist bottle to water (this helps the soil settle around the taproot) and put it in sheltered sun. (In other words, if you can leave your hand in the light for a minute and your hand gets hot, it is too bright. Think "sunlight through a lace curtain and you have the right idea)
