My seeds are not sproutings, can seeds die?

I planted some vegetable seeds and nothing is coming up except for the melons and pumpkins. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, I am watering them daily and still nothing. I do have cats and am wondering if that might be part of my problem. But the others are growing fine, its the others that are not. What should I do?
